We have rescheduled our face-to-face Spring event for a shorter virtual format.

Highlights from the 2019 HFRCC Research Symposium

March 15, 2019, the Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Center hosted its second annual symposium with an emphasis on intergenerational research.  There were engaging keynotes, presentations, and networking with community organization leaders, community members, faculty experts, and students who are passionate about moving forward the health and well-being of Flint.

Daniel E. Dawes is a nationally recognized leader in the movement to advance health equity among under-resourced, vulnerable and marginalized communities. An attorney, scholar and health policy expert, Dawes brings a forward-thinking, inclusive and multidisciplinary approach to the law and public policy, and has been at the forefront of recent major federal health policy negotiations in the United States. Among his many achievements, he was an instrumental figure in shaping the Mental Health Parity Act, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and the Affordable Care Act (“ObamaCare”).

keynote: debra furr-holden

C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health and Interim Director

 

Dr. Debra Furr-Holden is an epidemiologist with expertise in addiction epidemiology, prevention science, psychosocial measurement and behavioral health equity research, interventions and policy. In 2006, Dr. Furr-Holden was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers by virtue of her early career accomplishments in environmental research. In the past decade, Dr. Furr-Holden’s research has focused on developing environmental strategies, structural and policy interventions to promote behavioral health and health equity. Dr. Furr-Holden has worked extensively with a wide range of partners including community based organizations, local municipal officials, and policy makers. Her research has supported legislative efforts to impact zoning as well as state-level legislation to promote behavioral health equity. Dr. Furr-Holden’s community-based, action-oriented research has been well received by community stakeholders and drove multiple policy interventions to address some of the nation’s greatest public health challenges, with a special emphasis on health equity and policy-level interventions. Dr. Furr-Holden’s research is grounded in the rubrics of epidemiology and consistent with principles and practices for understanding social determinants of health and health equity. Dr. Furr-Holden is a C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health and the Interim Director at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Division of Public Health. She is also the Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and

 Dr. Cunningham will give an overview of various research conducted in the areas of opioid and other substance use.

Kirk Smith, MHSA, President & CEO, Greater Flint Health Coalition

Mr. Smith will discuss the strategies the Greater Flint Health Coalition is engaging in to address the Opioid Epidemic in Flint/Genesse County.

Patrick Carter, MD, Assistant Director, Injury Prevention Center, University of Michigan; Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine, U-M Medical School

Dr. Carter's will share details of his substance use and injury prevention work.

 Dr. Smart will discuss her work on the Flint Area Study (FASt), a community-based, longitudinal, citywide, multi-generational study of the epigenetics of resilience.
